AUGUST WRAP UP

I don’t know about you but am glad August is finally over. Whew, what a month, and as exhausted as we Black folks are with racism…. we still say #WakandaForever 💔

Thankfully summer holiday was still good while reading loads of amazing books at the seaside. Despite the anxieties, escaping in a good read made everything felt better with 28 books (13 POC authors)

NOTABLE MENTIONS:

All Boys Aren’t Blue: In a series of personal essays, George M. Johnson explores their childhood, adolescence, and college years in New Jersey and Virginia. All Boys Aren’t Blue covers topics such as gender identity, toxic masculinity, brotherhood, family, structural marginalization, consent, and Black joy.

Raybearer: A debut magical ride with West Africa folklore of loyalty, fate, and the lengths we’re willing to go for the ones we love. You get hooked from the beginning with it’s mysteries. And the Audiobook is just perfect.⁣

Against The Loveless World: It’s raw and brutal, but beautifully written with soothing vibrant scenery and cultures.⁣ It us through the life and journey of Yaqoot our main protagonist (who’s also called Nahr, Almas) as she slowly becomes radicalized while searching for a better life for her family throughout the Middle East. Now locked away in solitary confinement, she spends her days reflecting on the dramatic events that landed her in prison in a country she barely knows.⁣

You Had Me At Hola: Alexis Daria brings us on an unforgettable, hilarious rom-com set in the drama-filled world of telenovelas. Steamy and romantic.

Clap When You Land: A story of loss/grief/secrets /forgiveness. When the father of Camino and Yhaira was in a plane crash and how both girls (who had no idea they both existed) get to find out while processing their grief.

Heart Bones: I keep asking myself “how does Colleen writes her books?” She’s one of my top favorite authors and keeps shattering my heart with her compelling stories. “There are two different kinds of wrong. The wrong that stems from weakness and the wrong that stems from strength.” And Beyah and Samson had us at ‘Heart Bones’.

Go Deep: What happens when the sex hits deeper than either of them expected and the tender emotions can no longer be denied?⁣
Will their friendship and their hearts survive the fall? Find out in this steamy read.
